Call Me Phaedra: The Life and Times of Movement Lawyer Fay Stender

Call Me Phaedra: The Life and Times of Movement Lawyer Fay Stender (winner of the 2018 International Book Award for best biography) recounts in vivid detail the extraordinary story of a brilliant Berkeley lawyer who achieved amazing success working for social change at a time when white men still wielded near monopoly power in  mid-twentieth century America. Fay Abrahams Stender abandoned the concert piano as a teen to become a zealous advocate for society’s most scorned and vilified defendants, as part of a circle of Progressives who championed civil rights in the hostile environment of the Cold War Era. She gained international fame representing Black Panther Huey Newton and Soledad Brother George Jackson and later turned her focus from prisoners’ rights to feminist causes before her own life took a tragic turn. Critics describe Call Me Phaedra as “gripping,” “a compelling read” with “great emotional traction.”

Retired judge Lise Pearlman has won numerous awards for books on law, U.S. history and multiculturalism including two prior books on the “world-changing true story” of the 1968 death penalty trial that first brought Fay Stender international fame. Pearlman is currently producing an award-winning documentary film project on that trial.  She is also the author of the critically acclaimed 2017 book  With Justice for Some: Politically Charged Criminal Trials of the Early 20th Century That Helped Shape Today’s America.
